Katie is a graduate of Clarence High School, and earned a degree in graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She left the Buffalo area shortly after college to work at high-end design firms in Denver and Baltimore.

"Winning this contest has made me feel like part of the community again," she said. "Working on the design reminded me of so many aspects of Buffalo I missed over the last eight years. We've done a lot of travelling over the years and have seen many places, but Buffalo has always been the only spot that really feels like home. It's good to be back".

In her last home of New Hampshire, Chalmers was an art director at (Tulsa-based) PennWell Publishing, designing business-to-business magazines. She continues to work remotely for PennWell and also spends her time doing freelance work.

First Night Buffalo has held the poster design contest for the past three years with great success. Participants are given a theme and invited to create a design based on their interpretation of the theme. A committee judges the entries and the artwork from the winning entry is incorporated into First Night Buffalo promotional materials.
